Mechanical properties of Zr_(57)Nb_5Al_(10)Cu_(15.4)Ni_(12.6) metallic glass matrix particulate composites
To increase the toughness of a metallic glass with the nominal composition Zr_(57)Nb_5Al_(10)Cu_(15.4)Ni_(12.6), it was used as the matrix in particulate composites reinforced with W, WC, Ta, and SiC. The composites were tested in compression and tension experiments. Compressive strain to failure increased by more than 300% compared with the unreinforced Zr_(57)Nb_5Al_(10)Cu_(15.4)Ni_(12.6), and energy to break of the tensile samples increased by more than 50%. The increase in toughness came from the particles restricting shear band propagation, promoting the generation of multiple shear bands and additional fracture surface area. There was direct evidence of viscous flow of the metallic glass matrix within the confines of the shear bands
Nanoscale austenite reversion through partitioning, segregation, and kinetic freezing: Example of a ductile 2 GPa Fe-Cr-C steel
Austenite reversion during tempering of a Fe-13.6Cr-0.44C (wt.%) martensite
results in an ultrahigh strength ferritic stainless steel with excellent
ductility. The austenite reversion mechanism is coupled to the kinetic freezing
of carbon during low-temperature partitioning at the interfaces between
martensite and retained austenite and to carbon segregation at
martensite-martensite grain boundaries. An advantage of austenite reversion is
its scalability, i.e., changing tempering time and temperature tailors the
desired strength-ductility profiles (e.g. tempering at 400{\deg}C for 1 min.
produces a 2 GPa ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and 14% elongation while 30
min. at 400{\deg}C results in a UTS of ~ 1.75 GPa with an elongation of 23%).
The austenite reversion process, carbide precipitation, and carbon segregation
have been characterized by XRD, EBSD, TEM, and atom probe tomography (APT) in
order to develop the structure-property relationships that control the
material's strength and ductility.Comment: in press Acta Materialia 201
The effect of supersymmetric CP phases on Chargino-Pair Production via Drell-Yan Process at the LHC
We compute the rates for pp annihilation into chargino-pairs via Drell-Yan
process taking into account the effects of supersymmetric soft phases, at
proton-proton collider. In particular, the phase of the mu parameter gains
direct accessibility via the production of dissimilar charginos. The phases of
the trilinear soft masses do not have a significant effect on the cross
sections.Comment: 24 pages, 7 figure
The definability criterions for convex projective polyhedral reflection groups
Following Vinberg, we find the criterions for a subgroup generated by
reflections \Gamma \subset \SL^{\pm}(n+1,\mathbb{R}) and its finite-index
subgroups to be definable over where is an integrally
closed Noetherian ring in the field . We apply the criterions for
groups generated by reflections that act cocompactly on irreducible properly
convex open subdomains of the -dimensional projective sphere. This gives a
method for constructing injective group homomorphisms from such Coxeter groups
to \SL^{\pm}(n+1,\mathbb{Z}). Finally we provide some examples of
\SL^{\pm}(n+1,\mathbb{Z})-representations of such Coxeter groups. In
particular, we consider simplicial reflection groups that are isomorphic to
hyperbolic simplicial groups and classify all the conjugacy classes of the
reflection subgroups in \SL^{\pm}(n+1,\mathbb{R}) that are definable over
. These were known by Goldman, Benoist, and so on previously.Comment: 31 pages, 8 figure
Sudden death of effective entanglement
Sudden death of entanglement is a well-known effect resulting from the finite
volume of separable states. We study the case when the observer has a limited
measurement capability and analyse the effective entanglement, i.e.
entanglement minimized over the output data. We show that in the well defined
system of two quantum dots monitored by single electron transistors, one may
observe a sudden death of effective entanglement when real, physical
entanglement is still alive. For certain measurement setups, this occurs even
for initial states for which sudden death of physical entanglement is not
possible at all. The principles of the analysis may be applied to other
analogous scenarios, such as etimation of the parameters arising from quantum
process tomography.Comment: final version, 5 pages, 3 figure
Engineering Negative Differential Conductance with the Cu(111) Surface State
Low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy are employed
to investigate electron tunneling from a C60-terminated tip into a Cu(111)
surface. Tunneling between a C60 orbital and the Shockley surface states of
copper is shown to produce negative differential conductance (NDC) contrary to
conventional expectations. NDC can be tuned through barrier thickness or C60
orientation up to complete extinction. The orientation dependence of NDC is a
result of a symmetry matching between the molecular tip and the surface states.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 1 tabl
Novel Nanostructured SiO2/ZrO2 Based Electrodes with Enhanced Electrochemical Performance for Lithium-ion Batteries
In this article, a novel anode material with high electrochemical performance, made of elements abundant on the Earth, is reported for use in lithium ion batteries. A chemically synthesised material (SiO2/ZrO2) containing Si-O-Zr bonds, exhibits as much as 2.1 times better electrochemical performance at the 10th cycle than a physically mixed material (SiO2 + ZrO2) of the same elements. When compared to synthesized SiO2 or conventional graphite-based electrodes, the SiO2/ZrO2 anode shows superior capability and cycling performance. This superior performance is ascribed to the effect of ternary compounds, which contributes not only to increasing the packing density, but also to creating the Si-O-Zr bond that makes additional reactions between SiO2/ZrO2 and lithium ions possible. The Si-O-Zr bond also contributes to improved conductivity for SSZ and provides facile paths for charge transfer at the electrode/electrolyte interface. Therefore, the overall internal resistance in a battery would be decreased and better performance could thus be obtained, with this type of anode. In every result, the positive influence of the Si-O-Zr bonds in the anode of a lithium ion battery was confirmed
Mapping Global Star Formation in the Interacting Galaxy Pair Arp32
A multi-wavelength set of photometric data including UV (GALEX), optical, near-IR, infrared (Spitzer) and radio (VLA 20cm) images and spectroscopic observations are used to map the dust-obscured and unobscured star formation in the galaxy pair Arp 32. The system consists of an actively starforming galaxy and another one with depressed star formation. The most active galaxy has disrupted morphology and different sites of star formation. Spectroscopic data show hints of nuclear activity in its core, intense star formation in limited regions of the galaxy as well as an underlying population of stars witnessing a past episode of star formation. Current star formation rates are estimated from UV and bolometric IR luminosities
Controlling quasiparticle excitations in a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate
We describe an approach to quantum control of the quasiparticle excitations
in a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate based on adiabatic and diabatic changes
in the trap anisotropy. We describe our approach in the context of Landau-Zener
transition at the avoided crossings in the quasiparticle excitation spectrum.
We show that there can be population oscillation between different modes at the
specific aspect ratios of the trapping potential at which the mode energies are
almost degenerate. These effects may have implications in the expansion of an
excited condensate as well as the dynamics of a moving condensate in an atomic
wave guide with a varying width
